Jean Knight – best known for her hit ‘Mr. Big Stuff’ – has died… according to reports.
An unattributed one press release posing as the soul singer and New Orleans resident’s obituary is circulating online – and if we can believe it… it says JK passed away last Wednesday, although the circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear for now.
Knight’s 1971 song is by far her biggest claim to fame, but it makes a huge contribution to music and pop culture. ‘Mr. Not only did Big Stuff’ perform incredibly well on the charts upon its release – including five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Soul Singles chart, and peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 – but it was also eventually included in numerous films and TV shows.
Only a handful of shows that used ‘MBS’… ‘Family Guy’, ‘black-ish’, ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’, ‘Everwood’ and ‘The Deuce’ – just to name a few. On the film front, it was played in Will Ferrell’s ‘Semi-Pro’. Furthermore… the song has been remixed/sampled a lot over the years.
Some of the notable acts that turned this gem around… Heavy D & The Boyz, Eazy-E, TLC, Queen Latifah, Everclear, Girl Talk, Beastie Boys and John Legend. ‘Mr. Big Stuff’ was also covered a handful of times… famously by Precious Metal, Lyn Collins and many others.
Jean had recorded many more songs during her career… but none ever achieved the success of ‘Big Stuff’. Some of her other notable singles… “My Toot Toot”, “You Think You’re Hot Stuff”, “Carry On”, “Helping Man”, “Do Me”, “Jesse Joe (You Got to Go)” … and more.
She was 80.
REST IN PEACE
