A street cat turned a down-on-his-luck man into a millionaire.
Joshua Smith just received a $1.375 million judgment after a jury found that his landlord had cut down Frank, his Cheshire cat.
The Oregon man found the stray dog in 2017 and took him into a residential drug recovery facility where he stayed. Two years later, Frank went missing and Joshua knew his landlord was to blame. The landlord reportedly confessed and said he gave Frank to his girlfriend to take to a local shelter.
He filed a lawsuit, and it took the jury less than two hours to deliver the whopping verdict. Typically, in these cases, the animal’s owner could only recover the actual value of the cat, which would be virtually nothing. Although no information is available, it appears the jury awarded damages for intentional misconduct.
Joshua misses his cat, but he must be doing well now that he is a millionaire.
