Beyonce‘s reign as queen of the box office came to a quick end this weekend, as she fell from the top spot… and slid all the way down to No. 5, marking a huge drop.
The singer’s concert film “Renaissance” suffered a 77% collapse domestically, landing in fifth place behind a handful of films that have been in theaters for a while… and losing to a surprise newcomer who claimed No. 1: an anime film from the great Hayao Miyazaki.
We’re talking, of course, about “The Boy and the Heron,” which took in $12.8 million through Sunday. That’s clearly not a huge number, which makes Bey’s catch even more shocking.
‘Renaissance’ earned just $5 million domestically this weekend… a far cry from last weekend’s high $21 million tally in North American markets. While that initial figure was solid, it certainly didn’t compare Taylor Swift‘s opening weekend for the film ‘Eras’.
Remember, Taylor’s concert film made $92 million in its opening weekend… and suffered a roughly 65% drop the following week, with $33 million — but it remained the highest-grossing film at the time, beating Scorsese‘Killers of the Flower Moon’. Of course, the film continued to hold a strong position at the box office for several weeks afterward.
The other films released this week before Bey’s… “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” (#2), “Godzilla Minus One” (#3) and “Trolls Band Together” (#4).
Of course, regardless of the actual numbers… you have to imagine that Bey (and certainly AMC) sees the ticket sales as a win – and as a new way to distribute these types of films where the artists themselves can rake in a higher percentage. the profit. There will be more to come, we’re sure.
