Beyonce is all set to take the top spot at the box office this weekend with her new concert film, but this year it’s falling far behind another… guess who.
The Queen Bey had a strong start to the weekend on the first day with her film “Renaissance,” which grossed about $11.5 million between previews on Thursday and the full day of screenings on Friday. Domestically, projections call it somewhere between $20 million and $24 million through Sunday.
As we said, it’s certainly a solid figure when it comes to concert films – especially historically – but it pales in comparison to how Taylor Swift‘Eras’ movie did a few months ago in the same window…then it made $39 million domestically between Thursday and Friday, ending with a massive $92 million gross for its total opening weekend.
Of course, the touring film “Eras” has grossed over $250 million worldwide at this point.
Not to compare the two, but they have to be if Bey and Tay are the biggest pop stars in the world… and they’ve both released concert films within a short period of time. The juxtaposition is only natural, and the numbers are what they are.
It should go without saying… they support each other no matter what, and respectively attended the premiere of the other – Bey in LA for Tay and Tay in London for Bej.
And yeah… they posed together both times, so there’s no bad blood – or at least it seems that way. Their fervent fan base can sometimes be a bit more competitive.
Anyway, the real winner here is AMC, which exclusively distributes both films and is doing a big cleanup. Instead of bringing in an outside studio partner, they did it themselves… and so far it seems to be paying off.
Whodatunkit…Beyonce and Taylor dominated the big stage and the big screen this year. I didn’t see that coming!
