Gasperini wishes Freuler well after Nottingham Forest transfer

Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini has wished Remo Freuler well following his move to Nottingham Forest. The formalities of the deal were confirmed over the weekend and the player will bolster the midfield ranks.

The 30-year-old has been a big part of Atalanta’s success under Gasperini. He has made 259 appearances for the club and helped them achieve some brilliant results on the pitch.

Freuler captained Atalanta 18 times last season. As a result, he will likely represent a big loss to Gasperini’s team and he will take some replacement from their perspective.

Freuler has cost around £7.5 million. He joins the midfield ranks that have already been strengthened by the signings of Lewis O’Brien and Orel Mangala so far this summer.

Following his departure, Gasperini was quizzed on the thought process behind the decision. He delivered kind words about Freuler and wishes him well at the City Ground.

He told Tutto Mercato Web: “Freuler has this opportunity and it materialised in a short time.

“Now he’s gone to the Premier League, clearly he’s a player I’m very fond of. If he’s happy with this I can do anything other than thank him for what he did and wish him the best.”

This could be a quality signing by the Reds. Listening to Gasperini it sounds pretty obvious that the Serie A outfit didn’t really want to offload him this summer.

Freuler clearly felt that it was a good time for a chance. He ends a six-year association with Atalanta which saw him make 259 appearances for the club.

Forest were often overrun in midfield at Newcastle last weekend. With that in mind, the club have moved fast to get Freuler signed and he will almost certainly prove a useful asset.

It will be interesting to see where Freuler fits in at Forest. He often plays in a deeper-lying midfield role and the challenge for Steve Cooper will be help him thrive in England.
