A YouTuber was sentenced Monday to six months in prison for obstruction of justice after deliberately crashing his plane with one propeller… to boost his social media.
Trevor Daniel JacobThe 30-year-old Lompoc – a former Olympic snowboarder who faced a maximum sentence of 20 years – was sentenced by a US District Judge to just six months John F Walter …after pleading guilty on June 30 to one count of “destruction and concealment with intent to obstruct a federal investigation.”
Federal prosecutors say in a recent press release that Jacob admitted to orchestrating the crash on November 24, 2021 … by posting the pre-planned event on YouTube almost a month later on December 23 with the title “I Crashed My Airplane.”
In the video, Jacob is seen flying a single-engine plane from Lompoc City Airport to Mammoth Lakes… before claiming the plane’s engine failed after 30 minutes.
The footage shows Jacob opening the side door and jumping out to deploy a parachute just as the plane plummets and crashes below.
Prosecutors say he deliberately waited two days to report the pre-planned crash to the National Transportation Safety Board, which advised him to preserve the wreckage even though he dropped the investigation and told them he did not know where the plane crashed .
Instead, he used a helicopter to lift the wreckage out of the Los Padres National Forest on December 10, 2021… before dismantling it and removing it.
During his sentencing Monday, Judge Walter ordered him to surrender to authorities by January 29. Jacobs said in a statement released by his lawyer: “This experience was so humiliating.”
He added that the punishment was the “right decision.”
