TikTokers are taking to Target to prove that the major supermarket’s Black Friday deals may not be what they seem: They show that some sticker prices are the same… no matter the day.
There’s a viral trend on the app right now, which is Gen Zers heading to their local bullseye center and wading through the Black Friday sales that happened yesterday. But based on what they record… they seem to suggest that smart marketing is afoot.
Watch the video and you’ll see what we mean… in at least three cases, people remove the ‘Black Friday Deals’ signs (which show one price) and reveal the price tag hidden in the background. In the examples you see here, they are the same.
One girl hit a pallet of TVs, and the Black Friday markdown set it at $429. But if she removes the holiday price card, the regular card behind it has a matching number. In other words, she’s implying that there’s no real deal here…just new cardboard.
Another guy does something similar, but in the clothing department… where he pulls back a sticker price on a pair of pants – showing that the price has increased from $25 to $30… so the guy implies Target’s price is price driven to make it make it look like people are saving.
While most people are sensible about this sort of thing – companies adjust prices and signage to take advantage of a holiday – these young people apparently think they’ve discovered Watergate! 😅
We’ve reached out to Target for comment on this, but there’s not much more to say other than… welcome to capitalism, everyone. Now buy more new stuff and be happy, dammit!
