‘Sister Wives’: Meri Calls Kody’s Marriage ‘Over’ After Anniversary Chat

Meri Brown had to face some heartbreaking truths in Sunday’s episode Sister Women. Kody BrownThe woman’s estranged first wife has clung to the idea that she and her husband could reconcile romantically, but Kody made things all too clear as they celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary.

During the episode, Meri said that Kody didn’t reach out for their anniversary and didn’t acknowledge her birthday either, so she decided to call him. She seemingly caught Kody off guard and asked him if he wanted to do anything to mark the occasion. He shared that he was watching him and his wife Robin Brown‘s children and asked Meri to call back.

“When Meri called me and asked if we were going to do something for her, our anniversary, I just said, ‘Well, I’m watching the kids,'” Kody explains in his confessional. “It took me some time to realize that I needed a reason to say no to the event. I just didn’t think it was the right thing for me to do, and I had to think about that.”

Ultimately, Kody agreed to the anniversary date, but things didn’t go as Meri envisioned.

“At one point he referred to fake relationships or something like that, and I was like, ‘What do you mean fake?’” Meri later recalled. “And we were sitting across from each other at the table, and he was kind of making a gesture with his fingers, you know, between the two of us, he was like, well, this.”

Meri says she told Kody she wasn’t faking anything with their relationship, and he responded, “I don’t know why you even bother calling and saying happy anniversary, Meri.”

She said Kody then said, “We’re not meh…” before pausing. ‘And then he goes, but we don’t live like a married couple. I felt at that moment that he was stopping himself from saying, “Well, we’re not married.” And that was a great realization for me that he had thought that way all that time, all those years. But I didn’t know that.’

Meri went on to revisit some of her previous back-and-forth issues with Kody, saying that after her 2015 catfishing scandal, she asked him to take some space, and Kody felt Meri kicked him out.

“I never kicked him out,” she insisted.

Of their fateful anniversary meal, Meri added, “He actually said to me, ‘I have no desire, Meri, to be in a relationship with you.’ He said, ‘Don’t you understand, Meri, this is never going to happen. Your life is not one I want to imagine myself in.” I will never forget those words. This is the first time he’s ever said this to me.’

Meri called the conversation “very, very painful” and said she felt like Kody was “promised” to be with her forever.

Meri later said Kody told her he “never loved her” or felt romantically connected to her.

“That’s a bunch of bullshit,” Meri said of Kody’s claims. “Ask anyone we know. Ask anyone who saw us in our early years, even ten years ago, and they would know that this was just a bunch of bullshit he’s spewing at, maybe to try to justify how he feels now.”

She added that Kody is no longer interested in her, but is unwilling to be the one to officially break their “eternal covenant.”

“You can stay here if you want, but I’m thinking, ‘But why would I want to do that forever with someone who really changed their mind about me?'”

Meri even goes so far as to say, “Our marriage is over,” and claims her ex insinuates, “You can stay here and come visit me and Robyn and the kids if you want, but we’ll never have that.” no more marital relationship.”

Meri also claimed that Kody did not want to make the end of their marriage public.

“He said, ‘No, I don’t want to do that. I just have so much criticism. I don’t want to be open and vocal about it. Let’s just keep this between us,'” Meri claimed, adding, “I’m going not spend the rest of my life hiding the fact that this is the way our relationship is and hiding the fact that you told me you never want to have a relationship with me again. This is my story too, and I have the right to to tell my story.”

Meri notes that she can “end” her marriage to Kody, but says, “That doesn’t sit well with my values. Because I didn’t marry Kody and make this everlasting covenant just to say, ‘It’s not working for us. I think I’ll take it easy.’ And right now I don’t know what to do about it.”

As for things with Janelle, they’re not much better. The couple remains separated, with Janelle saying in this week’s episode, “We’re friendly when we need to be, but there’s really no connection.”

Christine Brown was Kody’s first wife to leave him in 2021. The images for this season of Sister Women was shot in early to mid-2022 when Janelle had separated from Kody. In January 2023, Meri and Kody both announced that they had “permanently ended” their marriage after years of estrangement.

Meri and Kody legally married in 1990 and divorced in 2014 so Kody could marry Robyn Brown and adopt her children from a previous marriage. Afterwards, Meri remained spiritually married to Kody prior to their announcement in January. She and Kody share child Leon Brown, who came out as transgender in 2022.

Kody’s only remaining marriage is to Robyn Brown.

Sister Women airs Sundays at 10pm ET on TLC.
