EastEnders star Sid Owen to reprise role as Ricky Butcher

EastEnders star Sid Owen is making a return to the show after 10 years away from his role as Ricky Butcher.

The actor will be back on screen later this year as part of a huge autumn and winter season for the BBC soap.

Ricky was last seen on the show in 2012. His return was tipped by The Sun on Saturday evening (August 13), although Digital Spy understands that his comeback will be for a stint rather than as a regular.

A show source told Digital Spy: “Ricky will be back on screen for a stint later this year, sharing scenes with his sister Janine and ex-wife Sam.

“Ricky’s reappearance will form part of some big storylines airing in the final months of the year and everyone on the show is very excited about what’s in store.”

EastEnders‘ new executive producer Chris Clenshaw has been working behind the scenes to make changes to the show in recent months.

Viewers have already seen Peter Beale leave as part of the shake-up, while Dana Monroe, Stuart Highway and Jada Lennox will be following suit in the next few weeks.

It’s thought that Clenshaw’s changes will include strengthening the soap’s family units and telling some gripping long-running storylines in the months ahead.

Speaking earlier this year, a show source told us: “He’s really keen to take the show back to its roots, build up the clans again with some big explosive long-running stories. It’s an exciting time to be on the show.”

Sid joined EastEnders as fan favourite Ricky in 1988, originally featuring until 2000. He returned again for two years from 2002, then was back on screen on and off between 2008 and 2012.

EastEnders airs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One, with some episodes airing on BBC Two during summer sporting events. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
