Angela Bassett is preparing for her life as an empty nester, next to her husband Courtney B. Vance – as their twins will soon be heading off to college.
The celebrated actress walked the red carpet at the season 7 premiere of her drama 9-1-1 in Los Angeles on Monday and opened up about what it feels like to see her children — son Slater and daughter Bronwyn — turn 18 again. January.
“Oh, I'm very sad about it,” she said, laughing. “I'm excited for them, I'm sad for myself.”
As her children go off to college and try to find the right education for them, Bassett has had to face the reality of having to send her adult children out into the world to fend for themselves, and she admits it's a lot to handle. to process. .
“Maybe I should go to therapy,” she said. “Just do a little.”
Both Bassett and Vance attended the Yale School of Drama where they first met, years before their long-lasting romance emerged — and the Black Panther actress admitted that she tries to gently move their children in that direction.
“I push it, but not too hard,” Bassett said. “I'm pushing it by keeping my mouth closed for now.”
In the meantime, before any decisions are made, Bassett is busy with the new season of her procedural drama, 9-1-1which moved from FOX to ABC for its final seasonand Bassett says the stakes are “incredibly high” this year.
Bassett reflected on her time on the show — where she played LAPD Sergeant Athena Grant-Nash since the series began — and talked about how she knows when it's the right time to step back from the series.
“When [Athena’s] too old for these streets to keep them safe,” Bassett said.
While she admitted she didn't feel like the time would come anytime soon, she said, “A hundred went by pretty quickly… So maybe another hundred?” I mean, we have the best cast, the best crew and really, it flew by. It's a pretty amazing achievement, but it went by in a flash.”
