Rishi Sunak is preparing to keep Jeremy Hunt as chancellor and then appoint MPs from the right and left after he pledged to build a “big tent” cabinet to help unite the party.
He will bring in supporters of both Boris Johnson and Penny Mordaunt in a “government of all the talents” when he appoints his cabinet on Tuesday, an ally said.
Jeremy Hunt is expected to be kept as chancellor for two reasons. The first is because he is currently holding the pen over the government’s plans, due to be published on October 31, for balancing the books.
Ideally Sunak would want to reassure the markets by allowing this to go ahead on schedule and keeping Hunt in post to do this would make
