Next Prime Minister odds tracker: Sunak and Hunt favourites in battle to replace Liz Truss

Liz Truss has only been in Number 10 for less than two months, but speculation is already mounting that her days as Prime Minister could be numbered.

Reports have emerged that certain Tory MPs are plotting to replace her with a unity candidate in the wake of the economic and political turmoil sparked by Kwasi Kwarteng’s mini-Budget last month.

Backbenchers and party grandees fear Ms Truss is no longer able to salvage her premiership, with polling showing she is haemorrhaging public support after her plans for unfunded tax cuts spooked markets.

One option reportedly on the table is replacing Ms Truss with a “dream ticket” featuring her former rivals for the Conservative leadership: Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt.

Mr Sunak came first in the ballot of Tory MPs in July, while Ms Mordaunt came third, meaning it is likely a majority of MPs could install either one as prime minister while avoiding another round of voting by party members.

These reports have already led bookies to tip Mr Sunak as the favourite to become the UK’s next prime minister, ahead of Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader.
