Wrexham beat Aldershot to return to summit

Wrexham returned to the top of the National League table with two first half goals seeing off Aldershot Town at the Racecourse.

Midfielder James Jones got the second following a goalmouth scramble.

Phil Parkinson’s side are a point clear at the top after Notts County were held to a goalless draw at home to Yeovil Town.

Aldershot, who have now lost three games on the bounce, remain 18th.

Within the opening minute Aldershot were awarded a free-kick, but captain Joe Partington’s effort sailed harmlessly over the crossbar.

Ollie Palmer headed over Luke Young’s free-kick and Elliott Lee’s effort from edge of the area was smartly turned around the post by Luca Ashby-Hammond.

It was a tight, evenly contested affair, but the home side broke the deadlock in fine style just before the half hour mark.

Mullin picked up the ball on the right wing and a strong run into the penalty area saw Wrexham’s top scorer chip Ashby-Hammond to put his side ahead.

Wrexham doubled their lead 10 minutes later following a goalmouth scramble in which Mullin could only fire across the face of goal with Jones in the right place to score from close range.

Ashby-Hammond made an excellent save to deny Lee following substitute Liam McAlinden’s cross while at the other end Frank Vincent fired over from close range for Aldershot.

Ollie Palmer, Young and Lee had further chances for Wrexham in the second half, but the hosts always looked comfortable as they secured a 10th successive home league win of the campaign.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said:

“I thought it was a good performance today. First half we had several chances before we got the goal, which was an outstanding finish from Paul.

“I was really pleased with that first half and hard to be critical of anyone. In the second half we couldn’t get that third goal, we’ve had chances and their keeper’s made an amazing save from Elliot Lee and Ollie’s had a couple of good chances.

“But I thought we were professional and saw the game through very well and pleased with how the lads approached the game.”
