England team news latest: Phil Foden to start against Wales with Kyle Walker in back four

Walker is in line to start his first game for club or country since October 2, following surgery, and his inclusion would give the defender vital minutes as England prepare for the knockout stages of the World Cup.

Starting Foden will go down well with Southgate’s critics, who questioned him for failing to use the attacking midfielder as a substitute against the USA.

Southgate had always planned to rotate his attacking players, other than Kane, and the decision to rest Saka and Sterling, who were both on target against Iran, is not thought to be detrimental to their hopes of starting more games later in the tournament.

Mason Mount played the full 90 minutes of the USA game, having stayed on the pitch for 71 minutes against Iran and may be given the chance to recharge his batteries by being named as a substitute tonight.
