It’s several weeks now since Cristiano Ronaldo made clear he wanted to leave Manchester United after just one season of his second spell in pursuit of Champions League football.
Remember that United are only in the Europa League this season and clearly the prospect of trekking to Sheriff Tiraspol and Omonia Nicosia didn’t appeal to the 37-year-old.
But the snag for Ronaldo is that, although many top clubs have been linked with him, he hasn’t actually received a concrete offer.
The likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich, PSG and Atletico Madrid all weighed up whether to commit the huge financial resources to sign Ronaldo – only to decide he was too expensive.
Although he has more recently been linked with a return to his first club Sporting Lisbon and also to Napoli, the truth is the only offer Ronaldo has received is from Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.
Now presumably he didn’t mean he wanted Asian Champions League football…
However, something may still materialise today, even if Erik ten Hag has repeatedly insisted he is ‘planning with Ronaldo’ in his team.
Or, as has been the case lately, amongst his substitutes.
