New twist in the Lotto shake-up campaign rule as TD to attend the live lottery draw

VETERAN TD Bernard Durkan takes his battle for balls to a live Lotto draw as he rails against the jackpot that rolls over for the 25th time on Saturday.

The Irish Lotto jackpot prize has now risen to more than €13 million after not being won since October 11 last year – almost 100 days ago.

Fine Gael TD Bernard Durkan slams the rollovers as he believes Irish punters are being undone.

And the Kildare North TD will now travel to a live Lotto draw to act as an independent witness to a live draw as part of its campaign for fairness for Irish gamblers.

Earlier this week we revealed how veteran TD plans to raise the Lotto non-winning streak with Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe in the Dail this week when politicians return to Leinster House.

In response, National Lottery bosses, via the Irish Sun, invited Deputy Durkan to their headquarters to watch a live draw and see how the system works.

Deputy Durkan told the Irish Sun he was happy to take up the offer and wanted a chance to raise his rollover issues with bosses.

He said: “I’ll talk to them about it and go to one of their draws.

“This is a national lottery that funds many charities. It is very important that we keep a close eye on how the procedures work at all times.

“They themselves say it is a game of chance. It is a game of chance, but there should not be a smaller or greater chance at certain times, whether it is the beginning of the year, the end of the year or whenever.”

The Fine Gael TD is concerned that punters are competing against a Lotto that is too difficult to win, resulting in repeated rollovers.

‘Random integrated’

The Lotto told the Irish Sun that rollovers “underline the arbitrariness that is integral to the design of the Lotto system.

Deputy Durkan, however, does not believe this and shot back: “That is not true. That is simply not true.

“There are certain trends that you can observe. For example, if certain numbers occur repeatedly over time.

“For example, if ten names continually appear among the first fifteen, that is not a game of chance. There is something at work in the system that favors ten out of fifteen.

‘There is no point in explaining that it strengthens the probability theory. It doesn’t do anything like that.”

The National Lottery is planning to organize a visit for Deputy Durkan to the RTE Lotto draw on Saturday January 20, with an invitation extended to him this week.
