A glimpse into the lottery winner’s secluded life in a high-security CASTLE before he died

LOTTERY winner Paul Maddison, who has died aged 73, once lived as a hermit in a high-security castle.

Paul Maddison and his former business partner Mark Gardiner won more than £22 million in the lottery jackpot in 1995.

Paul, originally from East Sussex, shared the money with Mark and later moved to Perth in Scotland.

Paul is said to have died on November 28, just months after his wife Evelyn passed away at the age of 62.

After Paul’s marriage fell apart, he moved to Lettertabor Lodge and fell in love with his cleaning lady Evelyn McGillivary.

After a Valentine’s Day wedding in Mauritius, the couple later moved to Robgill Tower near Dumfries. Paul paid around £750,000 for the romantic pile.

Paul took his privacy and security seriously and installed CCTV cameras, remote controlled gates and an intercom shortly after settling into the love nest.

Neighbors and locals said the couple were rarely seen leaving the confines of their romantic estate, which dated back to the 14th century.

The opulent tower, with a fairytale castle interior, was set in 37 hectares of rolling woodlands and gardens. There was a trout stream running through it.

The stack included a two-bedroom lodge, equestrian facilities and an indoor pool complex.

In 2008, the couple sold the tower for a whopping £2.8 million and moved back to the Perth area.

Evelyn, a former florist, said the house was too big for them and it was time to downsize.

She told the Record: “It was a fantastic and very happy house but it has become too big for us.

“Sometimes we’ve moved bedrooms for a change, but really it’s time for the next part of the dream.

“We did the big house thing.
‘Now we want something that is more manageable.
“This house is now a lottery fantasy.
“Maybe another winner will buy it.”

Unfortunately, Paul is later thought to have grown apart from his former business partner Mark Gardiner.

The couple had not seen each other since Paul failed to show up at Mark’s fourth wedding in 2008.

A spokesperson for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said: “The Procurator Fiscal has received a report in relation to the death of a 73-year-old man in Perth on November 28, 2023.”
