Prince Harry drugs story detail may have come from Piers Morgan, court told

The Duke is suing MGN over 148 articles he alleges came from illegal activity.

He has told the court that the thought of Morgan and his “band of journalists” listening to his late mother’s private messages made him feel “physically sick” and he is determined to hold him and others accountable for “their vile and entirely unjustified behaviour.”

The Duke also alleged that as a direct consequence of bringing the claim, he and his wife had been “subjected to a barrage of horrific personal attacks and intimidation” from Morgan “presumably in retaliation and in the hope that I will back down, before being able to hold him properly accountable for his unlawful activity towards both me and my mother during his editorship.”

Morgan has strenuously denied knowing anything about phone hacking.

Ms Kerr said in her witness statement that she would contact Palace press offices to check or get information, adding: “The then editor of the Mirror, Piers Morgan, also engaged with the palace press offices and would occasionally direct or inject information into a story.”

In court, she accepted that she would “not necessarily” know how Morgan might have obtained information, adding that it might have come from him speaking to “the Palace”.

She conceded that she would have included a “tip or information” provided by Morgan in a story.

‘One of the biggest royal stories’

Back in the witness box for a second consecutive day, the former journalist was quizzed about where she had obtained certain details in royal stories about the Duke.

She said it was possible that the quotes included in a January 2002 article headlined “Harry’s cocaine, ecstasy and GHB parties” had come from an article published in the News Of The World the previous day.

But Mr Sherborne said it was “precisely the sort of detail that would come from someone listening in to voice messages”.

He added: “This is one of the biggest royal stories of the time. Surely you remember what you did for this story?”

Ms Kerr replied: “I can’t remember – it’s possible Piers gave them to me, it’s possible the Palace. I don’t remember.”

Mr Sherborne responded: “You’re saying the Palace would have given you what Prince Charles said in highly sensitive meetings with his son?”
