Rex Heuermann — the alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer — has just been hit with a new murder charge … an expected development, officially rounding out the number of known victims.
Prosecutors filed new murder charges against Heuermann on Tuesday, accusing him of murder Maureen Brainard Barnes …a woman who has long been involved in the Gilgo Beach case, but is now linked to RH through the police.
Maureen disappeared in 2007 and her remains were found in 2010. Technically, she was the first of the Gilgo Four to be discovered within days of each other – with the other three women Megan Waterman, Amber Costello And Melissa Barthelemy.
Heuermann had already been charged in connection with their murders… and now he’s also being called for Brainard-Barnes – mind you, there are notable disappearances of women currently under investigation that could possibly be linked to this.
The additional murder charge for Brainard-Barnes seemed like something that was coming: Investigators were awaiting DNA test results recovered from her remains.
Now it seems like they feel like they have enough evidence to point fingers. Heuermann has pleaded not guilty the charges against him …he will have to answer for this at some point.
His lawyers have so far cast doubt on the DNA testing being conducted, arguing that the technology is flawed… and that it does not provide a ‘smoking gun’ but simply eliminates other possibilities. In short, they say the police wrongly labeled him as their man.
