Battersea Power Station: inside the transformed London landmark

When the editor of The Times Diary asked in jest for suggestions from readers what should be done with the great cathedral of electricity on the Thames after it closed, he was overwhelmed by the response. One thing is certain, he wrote on November 27, 1980: “Londoners love Battersea Power Station.”

Who could have guessed then that the top six storeys would eventually become the new London headquarters of Apple, with offices looking out over an atrium scooped out between the four majestic chimneys? One chimney houses a bubble lift that pops out at the top to provide a new panorama of the Thames and leafy south and west London. The shoulders of the power station now carry dozens of penthouses as well as rooftop
